There was a beauty so subtle the painters despaired of it. Bergamot at the wrist, white flowers at the throat, a musk so close to skin it could not be told from skin at all. She wore almost nothing, and undid entire rooms.

The poets tried to capture her and failed, because the thing about her was not any single feature but the way she seemed half-made of air, a presence you noticed only after she had passed, a warmth that lingered where she had stood.

Beauty, the house has always believed, is not the loud thing. It is the cashmere softness beneath, the skin-warm musk you lean in to find. It does not arrive in a blaze. It arrives like her, almost air, almost nothing, and stays in the memory long after louder things have been forgotten.
