Ruh-e-Hind

A traveller left the subcontinent carrying nothing but a small vial, and in it the whole of home: jasmine sambac from the courtyard at evening, aged sandalwood from the temple doors, Indian oud dark as the monsoon sky, the haldi and cardamom of every kitchen they had ever loved.

In foreign cities, when the loneliness came, they would open the vial. And the soul of the subcontinent would rise into the cold air, jasmine and smoke and spice, and for a moment they would be home, truly home, the way you can only be home in a scent.

This is the oldest magic the house knows: that a soul can be bottled, that a country can be carried, that you can leave everything behind and still wear, against your own warm skin, the unmistakable proof of where you come from and what you will always be.
