Gulnoor

In a walled garden where no gardener was ever seen, there grew a single Bulgarian rose that bloomed only at midnight, and only for an hour. They said it had been planted by light itself, that the white musk in its petals was distilled moonlight, that the sandalwood at its roots reached down to something warm and ancient in the earth.

People came from far to stand before it at the blooming hour. They expected heaviness, the cloying weight of other roses. Instead they found radiance, luminous and weightless, a brightness that asked nothing and gave everything.

The garden is gone now, or perhaps it was never on any map. But the rose remains, in the way certain beautiful things remain, as a feeling you carry into rooms that did not expect you, an occasion that arrives with you and leaves when you do.
